End of the year : Reflection
11th grade has been a memorable year for me. It was a year full of hard experiences and obstacles to overcome, I am happy I made it! I am very proud of my work ethic this year, I was very dedicated and persistent to achieve high grades; and I did. I decided to take Trig and for me that was a huge risk! It was a risk that was just an awful ride throughout the entire year, my grade going from a 45 to an 87 back down to the 70's was quite a ride! I don't regret giving myself this struggle because I learned, I tried and even though my grade was not fabulous it was something good! Next year, I am ready to take any struggles that come my way and overcome them! I am very excited to say I am now a senior, so close to begin a whole new chapter of my life. I need to work on my be precies and communicate outcomes, it has always been one of my toughest outcomes to achieve an exceeding standards but I am sure I will! I will dedicate my summer to having lots of fun, because I deserve it! But I will also, spend it reading a couple of books so my brain doesn't get lazy! Great Year and Great experience!
The narrative non-fiction unit has been an experience with literature that I am sure to remember. When we began this unit I entered the topic half halfheartedly and afraid. I was not sure how my struggle in English as a whole would relay to implementing the narrative non-fiction writing tools in real life scenarios. As I progressed through the unit I began to grow more and more comfortable as I was slowly gaining a grasp on how to efficiently utilize these tools. One of the basic lessons I took away from this unit was how to write more thoroughly and create more vivid images in the reader's head. It is hard to accept how fast English 11 has gone since it has been such an amazing experience to grow as a writer with the support of my students and teacher. I began to love learning every single aspect of English with the help especially of my new teacher, the aid she provided me not only helped me grow in her class but as a student overall. The style in which she taught by half the time teaching and the other half being asynchronous helped provide me a good balance of self reliance and teacher dependence. As a whole my experience was exceptional until we came upon the Macbeth unit, I am not a fan of Shakespearean literature to say the least! The old English style was very hard to comprehend and follow the story without the constant help of my teacher, I am glad it is over. My goal for English 12 next year is to keep digging deeper with the skills I’ve learned in English 11, and to become even more concise, precise, and detailed in my writing. I want to consistently expand my vocabulary with the help of more advanced texts and teacher conversation. I would like this last English class I would be taking at TYWLS to be as memorable as the other classes, and to continue to shape me in becoming a more intellectual writer and more independent women inside and out the classroom.

Student Led Conference Reflection:
English has been a very challenging class for me! Since English is not my first language that I was raised with, it has always been an ongoing struggle. Overall, I feel that over the course of the year I have grown into a better writer, reader, and I am more much engaged in English class. I feel successful and that the learning environment I am in as an 11th grader is quite comfortable. I feel like I can always count on the help of my teacher Christy with any problems I may have or interests in making my self develop into a better student. I have seen my growth over the course of the year through my grades, I can gauge the success I have had this year through the growth of my grades which reflect my work ethic. I believe that my outcomes are my strength, but as always there is still much more to improve not only with other aspects in the class but even my strengths. I am very proud of myself for the effort I have given and the dedication I have kept with this class. Through the Macbeth unit we have covered many outcomes such as create, discern, conclude, plan, be precise, and collaborate. We managed to demonstrate to our teacher that we have learned the outcomes well and have become able to implement them into our works. I believe that for the next Unit we will focus on all the outcomes but I am still not quite sure what we are focusing on.

Macbeth Reflection:
At the beginning when the class first began reading Macbeth, in all truth I was not excited at all and I was intimidated by the fact Shakespeare wrote it. I always thought of Shakespeare as being a boring and tragic person. I never thought of reading Shakespeare because the genres that he focuses on in his plays are not in my interest. What I took away from reading Shakespeare was experiencing a new genre and time period/style of writing. Although it was out of my interest radar to begin with I was very pleased by the tragedy genre that he wrote in as strange as it may seem. Shakespeare in every play has a message to portray whether is a tragedy, comedy, or dirty plays. What Macbeth taught me was a life lesson, I learned to never wish bad upon others because what you do will always come back to you and even worse in some way or another. Basically, the plague of guilt will consume you, karma is a force that some do and don't believe in but if you do, this play reinforces that you shouldn't play with it. Shakespeare portrayed this message through the character development of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and their desire for the throne Duncan had. They wished bad upon him and gone as far as to murder him, and at the end of Macbeth we see that the plague of guilt that has come upon Lady Macbeth and Macbeth eat away from them. Their wrongdoing comes back and kills themselves. In addition, subtext was also a big part of this unit. What I learned about subtext was that there's multiple ways where one could understand what one says and it could be interpreted differently. This Macbeth Unit was definitely successful!

Book Club (The Great Gatsby) and The Bluest Eye Reflection:
Do you feel these classics should be read by all high schoolers? What was your experience reading these classics?
I definitely feel that there can be certain classics that should be read through high school, it may not be these same classics we read but possibly a classic that draws in the individual reader more. Classics are a great opportunity to go back into a specific time era and understand a way of life impossible to live now. You as a reader get to experience life in a whole different way, you learn a lot about the respective time periods in each book. Through reading a classic we can learn a lot about a time period and a subject in a different more enjoyable way. If high school students are neglected exposure to reading classical works of literature at least a few times, then these students are missing out on a great opportunity to expand their knowledge. Reading classical books also aids in exposing students to a different variety of widely respected genres. These classic books not only teach us about certain time periods but they usually teach us important life lessons. A high school student should be exposed to life lessons as often as possible because these life lessons will have some of the most profound impacts on their future choices.
Reading these classics was a great experience for me; it was a great opportunity to walk in the shoes of the protagonist as if I was there in that time period. I got to see life in a different perspective; I was exposed to the flaws and imperfections of society years ago. Issues like race, religion, and male vs female conflicts all helped me make a connection between the issues of the past and the issue we are dealing with today. It is highly interesting to see that the past is adding on to our present and even our future actions. The classics we read not only gave me new found knowledge through experiences lived by the characters but also great life lessons that help me see how we got to where we are now and where we could go from here.

"This I Believe Essay" Reflection :
The process of writing this I believe was a very enjoyable experience because I got to express all of my internal ideas and beliefs freely. In doing so I got to express myself without having to worry about proving a point that wasn’t so personal to me. Unlike most papers I got to enjoy poring all of my thought into this paper in a form that is much more familiar to me. Being able to freely joke, make metaphors, speak as if I was speaking to someone much closer to me than a read, and being able to make so many personal references to my life ended up in what I believe to be a strong paper. On the other hand, not everything was sunshine and roses with this paper. Being confined to 500 words was a huge handicap for myself. I ended up having to remove three whole well written paragraphs in order to fit the word count criteria. In doing so I felt like I didn’t get to prove my point as strongly as I believe and I feel like I cheated my self on how much the topic meant to me. I feel like I lost my wow factor by being limited to so few words. All in all I highly enjoyed writing this paper, it is not very often that a student gets to spills their hearts out onto a paper and manage to make it come across grammatically and sequentially correct.
"This I Believe Essay" :
Six Word Memoir
Story Board
What people remember most in me is my long beautiful curls, my brown eyes, and my smile. But Jesus where to start? I don't know, its overwhelming trying to define who I am in just a few words. When I said ‘Jesus,” that was a homophone; not only am I overwhelmed but that was a secret little way of expressing my faith. There is so much to write about, but to me, letting the world know too much about my life has always been a no no. A huge part of what makes me, me, is the love that I share with my boyfriend who is an artist. In an effort not to make this all about him; I wanted to write about that one thing that fuels my success every single day and that is the family that we will one day make. Some little things about me are that I always feel like I need help, my most distinctive feature is my long curls, I love spending time in the kitchen, and one day I will have my tiny little princess. My top three memoirs at first were, one, marrying an artist. This was one of my top three because my boyfriend is a professional artist and it is one of my biggest dreams to marry him and start our family together. Secondly, my hair is my prized possession, the curls that fall from my head make me who I am to everyone's eyes. Finally, the kitchen is my second home! That's the one, my starting point on a journey to making my six word memoir that defines me. After changing the wording and punctuation and going crazy to find the right one that suits me best, my heart found the one. As many phases as I went through from the beginning to the end I finally came to the memoir that brought my heart at ease. Cooking is my life, it is everything to me; the smell, the taste, mixing, preparing, and everything! The spices, the beautiful colors and the final preparation. Being a chef is being an artist; it is having a love for what you do, it is something amazing and indescribable. Not all hands can make magic with in the culinary arts. Cooking is my dream come true, especially when there is a reason to make it perfect. The future family I will one day have helps motivate and inspire me when I am in the kitchen. I cant wait until I have that beautiful little girl as my helper, my little chef helping me cook. Her giggle when way we play and interact with each other will be those little memories that last a life time. Beautiful mother and daughter waiting for my wonderful husband to come home and serve him the magic I created. Cooking is the best way to create bonds.

A year I finally look forward to...
So far English 11 has been an amazing experience. It has been quite the change from 9th and 10th grade; the learning environment, although the same, has proved to be much more challenging and unique. My goals this year are to prevail over my old self, keep an exceptionally high grade point average, ask more questions when needed, and have no fear tackling the most important year of high school. The beginning of English 11 has definitely started off on the right foot. This great start is due to our teacher’s motivation to help us better ourselves as students. She is not like any other teacher I’ve had. She goes out of her way to make sure we understand the material and always has a very bubbly personality that rubs off on the students creating an exceptional learning environment. I am very excited and motivated to embark on this journey through English 11 with my teacher.
