What is the central idea of my project?
The central idea of my project is to project my inner personality as well as my outer looks through the painting of a lion. A lion stands for a very powerful, fierce, and all around strong animal which I believe reflects me as a person. I also want to portray my colorful personality and long curly hair that mirrors that of the mane of a lion. Being strong minded and confident in m modeling reflects the strong will of a lion in the wild. In this project I am combining two pieces of artwork, I am combining the portrait of a black and white lion with the portrait of a colorful lion. I wanted to use the shape of the black and white line to show my powerful being but the colors in the other lion to show my personality. Making the mane of the lion extremely colorful i think will help the art piece not only pop but express who i am as a person. The main is such a distinguishing part in a lion that no one could ever miss, this is the same way i feel with my long curly hair.
Skills I need to complete this project:
In order to complete this project, I need to dedicate myself to the lion’s face in depth to be accurate with proportions and also to focus on every tiny detail and feature that lions has. In addition to that, patience is another skill I need to develop throughout the process of sketching and oil painting my lion. I say this is true because I am a very impatient person but very picky, if I commit and error I know I would stress out very much and want to give up. I know I cannot get this way because this piece is a very important piece for me, since it describes and shows who I am.
What techniques must I practice first?
Before beginning to paint on the canvas I need to practice sketching different animal portraits at least 3 times and the fourth sketch would be straight on the canvas, this one will be the lion. I think practicing the technique of sketching before hand and practicing the proportions of different animals would be a good process for me to use to complete a well proportioned lion face. Practicing these basic skill could also help further my skills with any other portraits i may choose to do in the future. . In addition to practicing the proportions I also need to practice mixing different colors to see what colors look good and what colors do not in order to show my personality through the whole art piece. This is the part of the process that I think will be the most difficult but at the same time I could use the surprise of mixing colors to make the lions colors show on its own.
Artist as Inspiration:
Name: Pablo Picasso
Born-Died: October 25, 1881- April 8, 1973.
Where did the artist live?
The great artist Pablo Picasso spent the early years of his life living in Malaga, Spain. After a few years of living there, in 1891 Picasso moved to a small city named Acurna. But when tragedy struck Picasso’s family in 1895 due to the death of his sister he moved to Barcelona. At the young age of 16 Picasso set off alone to an art school in Madrid. Finally, Pablo Picasso finished his schooling and moved to Mougins, France where he began to continuously travel the country climbing the ladder of fame until his final days in 1973 in France.
Where did they go to art school?
When Pablo Picasso was living in Barcelona, Spain he applied to the prestigious School of Fine Arts and was granted admission due to an extraordinary entrance exam. In 1897 at the age of 16 Picasso attended the art school at Madrid’s Royal Academy of San Fernando where he quickly became bored of learning about the same old stuff.
Fun Facts:
Pablo Picasso was not only an artist who was deeply behind Cubism, Surrealism, his Rose Period, African Period, and Blue Period, but was an exceptional poet, stage designer, and playwright. Outside of his artist life, few know that Picasso was a womanizer who had countless relationships but only wed two times.
What media did the artist use?
Pablo Picasso throughout his career used a cavalcade of different mediums and excelled in all of them. The mediums he used range from sculptures made of wood, clay, and wax, printmaking, and paint. He is most famous for house paint in his paintings instead of the normal oil or acrylic paint.
What is their main style and characteristics of the artist’s work?
With Pablo Picasso being so well rounded in so many style of art it is difficult to narrow down on one more than the other. Depending on the time period Picasso’s work would vary and reflect the time period he was in. He is most famous though for his cubist paintings in which he daringly was testing the limits of conventional painting.
What Influenced their work?
The earliest influences of Pablo Picasso came from artist’s Edvard Munch and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This brought Picasso up as a Symbolist artist who began by showing the everyday misfits that he was exposed to in his Blue Period of art. Then on his way to developing his Cubism style of painting he was influenced by artists such as Paul Cezanne and Henri Rousseau. Wanting to break the conventions of the preceding time periods of art like the Renaissance, Picasso wanted to escape the constant importance stressed on conventional perspective space. Continuously throughout his career he would let the styles he saw influence his own creations as he was always eager to continue growing.
How did make you feel?
The work of art i chose that heavily influenced my painting was Pablo Picasso’s “Lion Head.” I admire how Picasso was able to stray away from the realism and bring his own emotions to the face of the lion abstractly. More often than not where we look at an image of a lion through the hands of an artist a sense of realism is trying to be achieved. Pablo Picasso, through this piece, showed how he was unafraid to break the boundaries of conventional art and express emotions in his own unique way. With very loose and free brush stroke Picasso leaves a feeling of freedom and life in the lion. With the brush stroke we get the wild spirit of a lion but with the his color use Picasso is still able to evoke the feeling of power. What really drew me into this painting though was the blue brush stroke painted on the lion's mouth, these strokes portray an almost childish smile giving the lion a very happy and lively feeling. The mixture of feeling and emotions that are given off by this lion is exceptionally done; at a first look I am filled with power, joy, and freedom. Then the lion was a clear choice of subject matter to me because my personality is very strong and demanding like a lions and the coor use by Picasso helps portay my loving and bubbly personality. Furthermore, the mane on the lion is one of the most eye catching and iconic things that make a lion so prominent; the curls that I have on my head are what capture the eyes of many people because of how prominent and different my long full head of curls are.

Beginning of the Project ( Process) :
The beginning of the project was very overwhelming for me! From the moment I picked up my pencil, I was nervous. I began with a simple sketch of the lion because I knew that I would have to play with the proportions to keep the image looking like a lion. I wanted to make sure that I was making the eyes large enough, the whiskers long enough, and the nose in the correct position. It was very overwhelming because I never scaled a drawing to such a big proportion, this made me doubt how I was drawing this and at times left me wanting to give up. After the sketch of the face was ready I was left with the mane. This was the most intimidating part of the painting to me, since the medium of choice was oil paints I had to begin the mess of hair with a simple base. Upon laying down my base I had to go in depth to create contrast between the strand of hair with the use of colors like, red, orange, yellow, purple, burnt sienna, and a whole number of colors. That is what I ideally wanted for the mane to consist of, a cavalcade of lively colors but the thickness of my brushes strokes was making this process sloppy and difficult. Then with time I began to start darkening the roots of the lion’s mane, and as it got out into the canvas I added lighter colors to capture light making the mane look thick and colorful. I was now happy with the mane since it was exactly how I wanted it, colorful and thick to portray an emotion of force in his hair. This was essential to me because a lion to me is nothing without it’s mane. The colors represented how outgoing of a person I am and the hair represented the strength of a lion. A lion without its mane is powerless and myself without my long curly hair feel powerless and less confident. After, focusing most of the time in the mane it was now time to move on to the next step, the face.
Middle of Project (Process):
Although the face was the most frustrating part for me I could not help but laugh and have a good time doing it! It was quite fun, I experimented with many different colors and felt a sense of freedom while doing so! I started off with light brown, then transitioned to a bright gold but it did not blend in with mane so I had to add some shadows and lighting to make the face more vivid. The process was really getting to me! The face was the best part for me because I experimented many foundations until I got exactly what I wanted. The process of having to go back to the base after so much work was challenging but helped build my patience and perseverance as a person. Some yellow, burnt sienna, and brownish gold highlights came into the mix, I felt like a cosmetologist perfecting their model! Finally, I was closer to an end, all I had up next was the creation of the ever so difficult and dreaded nose and eyes.
End of the Project (Process):
Many stages of this process I feared and did not want to tackle but the nose and eyes take the cake! This process was absolutely terrible, this was the hardest part for me. The nose was very difficult for me because I did not know what color exactly to paint it. I want it to be light brown but then I saw the the light brown blended in too much with the base of the face, I tried creating my own color but couldn't quite get it. Looking back on the process I was really engraved on having a light brown nose for this lion. I was very frustrated because I did not want to change my original plan of a light brown, this was because I am a very self centered person that will make a decision and not stray away from it no matter what. Finally I came to the acceptance, change is needed, so I decided I needed a blacker nose with a nice white glaze to show a moist texture that brought the vivid colors of the face to life! In addition to the hardships faced with the nose, the eyes killed me. The eyes really wanted to test my character.. It was the hardest part because all the detail, coloring , shape, and outlining was very difficult to address. The slightest mistake would seem to alter the look of my lion so dramatically for the worse. In order to keep from depriving the lion of emotions and creating a horrifyingly surprised look on his face, many colors, details, and corrections had to be made. I managed to come up with a nice tone of amber with green reflections in his eyes that ultimately, paired with a good outline, left me satisfied. Overall, my experience with the lion and oil painting on canvas was truly unique, though I am very satisfied with what I have done in the future I would love to go back in and touch it up even more!
Artist Statement:
My work of art is an oil painting portrait of a lion. Through this lion I see a portrait of not only the fiercest animal in the wild, but a portrait of myself. The theme of this painting is myself, but I wanted to portray myself symbolically through a lion for many reasons. In myself I see the strength and force of a lion and through my hair I can relate to the importance of that of a lion and it’s mane. My entire life I have loved lions with a passion; everything about lions fascinate me, their force, mane, colors, eyes, everything! My boyfriend Austin, painted a mural of lion which emulated the pride of his school and it fascinated me how detailed and strong that one lion looked. The strength that vibrate off of his painting made me think of how amazing it will be make a lion portrait which would symbolize myself. What is unique and special about my artwork is its colors and brush strokes. I decided not to try to make my lion as realistic as possible but to loosely and uniquely add different shades and colors to a typical looking lion. With my color choice I wanted to show my outgoing and vivid personality. I decided to use oil paint for my canvas because oil has always been a rich and thick paint that makes the painting shine, and fills the painting with life. The meaning behind this work is made more to please myself and not cater specifically to the viewer. I have grown more accepting of my forceful personality and more deeply attached to how meaningful my hair is to me. The mane is is a very important piece of this artwork to me because of the impact I believe my hair has had on my modeling career. Like a lion’s mane separates itself from looking just like a tiger, my hair separates me from looking that much more extravagant from the other models.

Perspective Explanation:
Perspective in art is a 3D visual representation of an image as seen by the eye on a flat 2D surface. It is the art of drawing an image to portray the height, width, position, and varying angles of the work as convincing as possible. This is used largely to make images on a flat surface appear real to the human eye.

LINEAR PERSPECTIVE: ONE-POINT PERSPECTIVE
ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE uses a single vanishing point to draw an object.
ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE uses a single vanishing point to draw an object.
Summary:
Linear perspective is when lines and spatial alignment is sued in a way to create the illusion of depth. Linear perspective is basically divided into one, two, three, four, and five point perspective. A key tool used in linear perspective is the amount of vanishing points that are on the horizon line. ue to these vanishing points, as a viewer we are able to tell whether a drawing is supposed to be rotated, floating, far away, or close up. Through this, all of our depth is created. Linear perspective brings a 3D work of art on to a flat 2D surface. Brunelleschi's perspective experiment was first conducted in the main door of the Cathedral in Florence. The experiment that he demonstrated showed that through the use of linear perspective the realism that can be created. This led to the creation of linear perspective in the modern world by Brunelleschi in the 15th century (1420). Brunelleschi had developed a few accurate elements to be used which would make linear perspective easier, these elements would be the use of a horizon line and vanishing points. The video was really detailed and interesting, the whole idea of the cathedral being drawn and constructed with vanishing points was absolutely amazing. The idea that this brought me made me feel like an artist and having tutorials like this was an amazing opportunity.

Trial Run-Progress Explanation/ Pictures
Due to a change of schedule I was unable to enjoy going through all of the trials with my project. I didn't get the pleasure of jumping over obstacles and making myself grow through constant feedback. On the other hand though, I managed to jump into the project with a decent amount of success. I began my process of creating this work of art by starting with a draft. At first creating this draft was very difficult and confusing, in my opinion its the initial start of a piece that's the most difficult. Trying to grasp horizon line and vanishing points was very challenging at first; I was unsure of where to begin my horizon line and where would be the best places for me plot my vanishing points. I wanted my lines to be impeccably straight from point A to point B. With my initial trial I learned that if I wanted this artwork to come out perfectly it would have to start with my draft. For my drawing I decided to do a few skyscrapers in Manhattan, I had the intentions that drawing this would be fairly easy as well but this was surely not the case. One of the issues that I encountered when I was trying to do this project was keeping not only the building, but all of the small parts like the windows and doors in perspective. I was not connecting everything back to the original vanishing point on the horizon line. Since I was not doing this the lines in my drawing were not making sense and coming out crooked. It was a complete disaster! This was very discouraging to me since I felt confident on the task, I felt like starting all over form nothing but I knew I did not have the time. It even got to the point where I wanted to randomly put in a lion! But I didn't stop, I knew that I could work with what I had an turn it into a piece I love. It felt like my favorite word now was becoming my teachers name, because that was all you heard my voice call for 45 minutes everyday! I am a perfectionists when it comes to my work. After all of the review and feedback that my teacher gave me I dwelled on and capitalized on the advice. I redid all of my lines to make sure that all of the lines connected back to the vanishing point so everything would come out coherent. The trial runs that I had to go through helped me build up my skill and understanding of linear perspective. This experience also helped me realize that I can not have a master piece from the beginning.

Final Outcome:
The entire process of creating this piece was very stressful but in the end very satisfying. Since I had to jump into the lesson late I was very proud of myself for catching onto the information even though I missed so much of the lesson. I was able to recreate an image efficiently through the use of a new technique while still adding my own technique. Going through the different trials of this artwork while working with a whole new technique was very challenging but enjoyable; I got the opportunity to quickly react on a mistake I made and turn it into a part of my art work instead of starting from scratch.

For my work of art I created a street view of 5th Avenue in Manhattan. I chose to do this view of New York because its something I can connect to. I wanted to show a few things like the beauty of everyday life in New York created by the skyscrapers, a little view of New York City; and show the uniqueness of living in New York everyday through public transportation, skyscrapers and shopping centers. Most people will overlook the flag hanging over the street as a symbol of my self, but that is the idea behind it. I added a capricorn sign on a made up flag to add my own personal touch. The style of art I decided to use at first was water color painting because I wanted to show through the use of colors the light and happiness New York City is always infilled with. On the other hand after thinking it through I realized that if I used just black and white it will portray a mysterious sense in the piece and show there are many unknown and mysterious sights in New York City, like any other place in the world it has its ups and downs. Saying this, I though using the black and white will leave the emotions unique for each viewer, some may look at the work and see a lifeless and hectic street, but for some viewers like myself we can fill in the empty space with memories of home and happiness. I I feel very proud of the outcome of my art piece due to the fact that I came to the art class in the middle of the project, and I jumped right in and knew what I wanted to do. I took every single minute of class to work in every detail to make it perfect and feel satisfied at the end. It took me a few times to get a product in which I was comfortable with the core techniques we were using. In the end after a few tries I ended up with a piece that is very satisfying for myself and I hope the viewers as well.
